The talent continues to rise at Plaza Linda - This Friday, I am featuring the return of John Batdorf! Last year Jon Batdorf was inducted into the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! On tour and returning to Plaza Linda for a second time is Acoustic Pop Rock Country artist John Batdorf! Check out who he played with:

I have survived many careers in one lifetime. Starting with the 70’s as a recording artist with Batdorf and Rodney and Silver. I made records and toured this country and Canada for most of the 70s. We headlined many shows, but as an opening act we got to play with a lot of great groups like America, Seals and Crofts, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, Bread, The Youngbloods, Hall and Oats, Cheech and Chong, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Pure Prairie League, Harry Chapin, John Prine, Dave Mason, Kris Kristofferson just to name a few! A great time was had by all.

I spent the 80’s as a staff songwriter writing songs for America, England Dan, The Curry sisters and Kim Carnes, and as studio singer singing on hundreds of jingles, movies, and TV shows. I sang on four main titles including, "Doctor, Doctor", "Tom and Jerry Kids", "Garfield and Friends" and "Promised Land". I sang background vocals on some really great recordings by Rod Stewart, Motley Crue, Dave Mason, Eric Anderson,The Jefferson Starship, Berlin, Donna Summer, Dwight Yoakum, Boy Meets Girl, Mickey Thomas, Stan Ridgeway, James Lee Stanley, David Lee Roth, The London Choir Boys to name a few.

Then came the 90’s and I started producing records and commercials. During that time I met and went on to write some great songs with my friend, Michael McLean. We have recorded 4 CDs together. In 1996 I got my first chance to score a CBS TV prime time show, "Promised Land". I composed all the music underscore for three years until the show came to an end. I went on to compose music for another CBS drama, "Touched By An Angel" which after nine very successful seasons is no longer in production. TBAA and Promised Land reruns still appear somewhere on the planet every day of the week. Soon after, I composed the entire musical score for a 2 hour made for PAX TV movie called "Book of Days" which appeared January and March of 2003. "The Best Two Years", which I also scored and wrote songs with Michael and Scott McLean, had a successful theatrical run in 2004 and is now available on DVD as well as the soundtrack on CD.

Now entering into the new millennium, John has recorded a new CD with James Lee Stanley "All Wood And Stones" (a highly original take on early Rolling Stones songs, done acoustically with tight harmonies) along with his first solo EP, "Side One." His first full length solo CD, "Home Again" is an acoustic guitar and vocal enthusiasts dream come true! John’s 2008 CD, "Still Burnin’" teams him up again with Mark Rodney. The duo recorded a live show at XM Studios in Washington D.C. revisiting many of their great songs from the 70s. Also John and Mark have recorded two brand new songs in LA that are also included in the package. This marks the first new Batdorf and Rodney recordings since 1975! Now in June 2009, at last, after one year from writing to mastering, Johns’ finest CD ever, "Old Man Dreamin’" is taking on the world! Check it out... When you hear John sing songs about things that really matter to him, and you’ll understand why they mean so much to his fans that have spanned over three decades.

FYI - It’s Mary’s B-Day Party & we’re gonna dance about it!

The Blackouts feature incredible vocals, amazing musicianship, a super high energy show, and a song list that is different every time. The Blackouts play 80’s dance tunes, 60’s soul, 90’s alternative... you just don’t know what is coming next. Come early, its usually packed.

2500+ gigs later, The Blackouts ask themselves this question - "are we a Santa Cruz institution, or do we need to be institutionalized?" Indeed , an eighteen year past in the life of the busiest rock band in Santa Cruz history has definitely been colorful. From playing full blown concerts with major acts, to a bunch of 4th and 5th graders at an elementary school. Gigs all over the west coast. Broken band vehicles on the side of the road. Playing with 103 degree fevers. Driving 300 miles to a show ,and forgetting the guitars. Food poisoning from club food. 7 gigs in three days. Double bookings. Famous musicians sitting in. Countless sold out clubs. Wild, crazy nights. These are The Blackouts. Doing what they do- getting people excited, getting people partying, getting the booty shaking on the dance floor. The Blackouts are proof positive that when you love what you do, you do it well.

CHICAGO FIRE BLUES WITH JOHN BROADWAY TUCKER
I don’t have to tell you people what a great time and packed house it was when Chicago Fire played last time. We are going to be jammin’ and enjoying this awesome blues band again featuring John "Broadway" Tucker once again! This time it’s with his back up band Mississippi to Monterey and I know by the sound of them, it is going to be another sensational evening. Please RSVP for best seating to this incredible performer and groovin’ band or Call 659-4229 for reservations.

JOHN “BROADWAY” TUCKER AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS “2010 BEST BLUES BAND AWARD” BY THE BAY AREA BLUES SOCIETY.

TOUR OF POLAND SCHEDULED FOR SUMMER OF 2011

For over 30 years John “Broadway” Tucker has playing at clubs and most of the major festivals in California including the San Francisco Blues Festival in 2000. Tucker, who performed on the main stage at the 2006 Monterey Bay Blues Festival, was also the recipient of the prestigious Monterey Bay Blues Festival MOBAY Award. The MOBAY has previously been awarded to such blues legends as Etta James, Clarence Carter, Koko Taylor and Charlie Musselwhite. He has released 4 albums; ’Impromptu Blue’ featuring pianist Bill Heid; two CDs on the Messaround label; and a live recording of a concert that he performed in Poland. He recently released his 5th album, “Somebody New”.

A soldier in the mid-1960s, Tucker was transferred from Germany to Fort Ord, near Seaside, California. It was in Seaside that he started performing 6 nights a week, singing soul, r&b, and straight-up blues with ’the Invaders’ at a now-defunct club at the corner of Fremont & Broadway, a hot spot where many West Coast luminaries would come to jam (After Jimi Hendrix’s now-famous appearance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, he came down to the club to finish out the night by playing with Tucker, getting back to his Chitlin Circuit roots). The club is long gone, but John was so associated with it that locally the name "Broadway" became synonymous with him. He was then sent to Vietnam and in 1975 he resettled in Seaside.

John, who performs every other Saturday in San Francisco at the Saloon with guitarist Dave Workman performed over 30 European dates the summer of 2008 performing in Poland, Switzerland, Hungary and Italy. Check out one of his many videos of his third European tour at You Tube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoQVnB3NpeE . He has been booked to perform in Poland the summer of 2011.

Henhouse is “Clucking good music" - With three of the most popular Americana vocalists in the Monterey Bay area, Henhouse delights their fans with their engaging stage presence, upbeat songs, and great harmonies. The band is fronted by Sherry Austin on Rhythm guitar and vocals, Sharon Allen on vocals and guitar, Tracy Parker on bass and vocals, and Santa Cruz legend, Patti Maxine on lap steel and dobro. Their music covers the range from sweet love songs to gritty, rockin’ songs about cars, trains, and love gone wrong. They sing with authority and passion, their distinctive blend of folk, country and rock, is filled with warmth and conviction.

The band performs original songs written by Sherry and Sharon Allen, as well as much loved covers by Americana artists, such as Kate Wolf, Townes Van Zandt, and Nanci Griffith.

Sharon Allen loves to sing. And people love to hear her song. She possesses a beautiful, unaffected voice that is gentle and sweet on the ear. Well-known for her years as a blues singer with the Firebirds, Sharon shows equal passion and mastery of Americana songs that fill her solo album, Along the Way.

Bass player, Tracy Parker, is often called the KD Lang of Santa Cruz for her amazing vocal range. Her voice is well suited for the Country standards and torch songs that leaves audiences begging for more.

Lap steel virtuoso Patti Maxine is one of the hardest working musicians in Santa Cruz. A session player in constant demand, Patti plays most nights of the week. A musical Swiss army knife, Patti handles a wide variety of styles with ease, sliding gracefully form Hawaiian to swing, from R&B and rock, from blues to jazz and back again.

A musical neophyte compared to the rest of the group, Sherry’s been making up for lost time. Putting out three albums in the past ten years, and currently working on her fourth, her music has received regular airplay from KPIG and many other stations worldwide. The Sherry Austin Band has played everything from big festivals to intimate house concerts. The recently started Henhouse group, looks forward to pleasing audiences around the Monterey Bay Area and beyond.

The Good Intentions ♪♪♪♪♪

Someone Else’s Time

Boronda Records

Americana/Folk/Bluegrass

The Good Intensions are a fantastic band out of England that has got the Americana thing down pat! Husband and wife team Peter Davis and Gabi Monk along with friend Francesco Roskill make up the Good Intensions. This is their second CD and it is a wonderful sophomore presentation. You can tell how good an artist or band is by their second album. They have their whole life up until that point for their first effort and a much much shorter time for their second. The Good Intentions have raised the bar for second albums.

This album is much more Bluegrass flavored than their first, which is not a bad thing. England seems to be going thru a Bluegrass awakening in the last few years. This album fits right in with that movement and a whole lot more. The authentic instrumentation and old timey feeling of this CD harkens back to a simpler time. You can imagine yourself sitting on a grand porch on a cool summer’s evening drinking sweet tea smelling the flowers in bloom, and hearing the evening’s summer creatures emerging from their hot days rest to bring the night alive with their voices and songs.

There is not a bad song on this CD!!! They are all fantastically written and played. Peter Davis wrote all of these songs and deserves to be mentioned as a songwriter in the same breath as, Phil Lee, John Prine, and Kevin Welch as top Americana writers today. Davis has caught the elusive “element” that makes a writer a step above his peers. His simplicity in choosing chord progressions and melody’s really makes these songs come alive. Gabi’s harmonies are as wonderful as Emmylou Harris’s on the Gram Parson albums of the early 70’s.

My favorite songs on the album are Everybody Loves a Drinking Man, Coal Miner’s Lament, Send the Devil Back to Hell, and the Sound of Time Passing. All are wonderfully written and orchestrated. Hat’s off to Rick Shea for the absolutely beautiful mandolin parts on this project. Roskill and Eric Brace add fantastic harmonies on the songs which give them that added textures so often forgotten in today’s music.

Hat’s off to the Good Intentions!!! They hit a homerun here!!! Hopefully this CD will give them the exposure they deserve both in Europe and in America!!! Please make every effort to find this and their last CD and add them to your collection. It is great to see wonderfully nice people get the credit they deserve for the hard work they put into their craft. Davis, Monk, and Roskill along with the name The Good Intentions should become a household word in the Americana and music world. They have earned it!

They’ve played shows with some of the most acclaimed artists and songwriters, including Taj Mahal, Los Lobos, Etta James, The Radiators, Robert Earl Keen, John Hammond, Augie Meyers, Dave Alvin, Guy Clark, and Chuck Prophet, among others. His newest and fifth CD, “Railbirds,” is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed “Hunkpapa.” His original roots rock ‘n roll songs etch a uniquely American, and specifically California, landscape. The reviews for “Hunkpapa” encapsulate what makes Halford so distinctive and compelling:

“Halford’s songs can serve as sagas of America that can stand for all time.”

John N. Lomax

Houston Press

“Halford is probably one of the finest slabs of roots rock and country fried blues and soul you’ll hear in this or any other year. Halford is the total package: an engaging singer with razor-sharp guitar chops who writes catchy songs loaded with storied lyrics—it’s almost frightening how good this guy is.”

Bill Frost

Salt Lake City Weekly

“This is great rootsy rock music. Halford’s slide playing is raucous, raw, and foreboding. His poetry transcends the run-of-the-mill lyrics.”

No Depression Magazine

“I am here to place Jeffrey Halford up on the pedestal with such figures as John Fogerty, Randy Newman, Alejandro Escovedo, and John Prine—and Bob Dylan—in the pantheon of great American singer-songwriters.”

Wicked Saints is an acoustic folk-rock/americana band with a cool range of songs that lets all the influences in. From a swampy Louisiana groove to reggae styled pop/blues, a driving beat, or sweet and heartfelt.

Singer/songwriter Paul McCarty sings lead, and plays guitar and harmonica. He was raised in a musical family in the musical city of New Orleans, and was a music composition major in college with a background in indie film scoring. Although folk-influenced, his songs seek stranger directions melodically, harmonically and lyrically, sometimes drawing upon his childhood influences like Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot and Led Zeppelin, and sometimes resorting to some college-knowledge.

Chad Watson joins on bass. "Holding Down the Fort" has been the longest running passion of Chad’s life. Since the Beatles first came to America, he’s been in love with the electric bass. "My dad played upright bass clean through my childhood years. I’ve always felt close to that low-end rumbling, whether it was in our living room as dad practiced or on the various records we played on our stereo hi-fi with the bass turned all the way up!" Chad has a rich career, having played with Charlie Rich, Janis Ian, Freddy Fender, The Imperials, Kim Fowley, Little Feat, Delaney Bramlett, and many more. Chad is also an amazing guitarist and plays solo or with his wife Pam Loe. Check out his music at chadwatson.us.

Drummer John Gannon has an impressive dynamic presence. He gives the band a real range of character, from a cool groove with a light touch, a train-beat, or a strong Bonhamesque beat. But hand him a guitar and he’ll tell you a story of his own. Honed from years of campfire singing, John brings a great energy to the microphone and holds your attention. John’s narratives might leave you laughing or bring a tear to a glass eye.

We’ve recorded our debut album at Milestone Recording in Los Angeles, produced by Annie Miles and at Wilmac Studio in Altadena, produced by Paul McCarty and David Williams.

ABOUT AMANDA WEST~ Philosophical Folk Fusion ~ "Amanda West: Songs to think about" - ’Sleepy John’ Sandidge - KPIG Radio, Freedom,

If an inquisitive mind, an open heart, and a beautiful soul took a walk and discussed what it means to Be, their conversation might sound like the music of philosophical folk songstress, Amanda West.

The California based songwriter has been singing since she was born, playing guitar since the tender age of 11, and performing for over a decade. Listeners repeatedly note she has "the voice of an angel." To accompany her songs, West occasionally plays a light-hearted banjo, a pop-inspired piano, or a tribal West-African djembe, in addition to her ever-steady acoustic guitar. Notable influences include Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, and Loreena McKennitt.

Amanda West has played stages up and down the West coast from Ghengis Cohen in Los Angeles to Yoshi’s in San Francisco, as well as the legendary Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. Festival credits include the Santa Cruz River Arts Festival, the San Francisco Free Folk Festival, the Yakima Folk Festival, the Downtown Berkeley Music Festival, as well as open mics at California WorldFest and the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival.

Regularly performing in and around the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas, Amanda West has been commissioned for work in film, and performances at weddings and other private events. She has joyfully shared the stage with Nina Storey, Inga Swearingen, Raining Jane, Rebecca Riots, Joanne Rand, The Bowmans and Megan Slankard, among others.

 Craig Rayburn
CRAIG RAYBURN, SINGER-SONGWRITER

“Craig and his songs are woven from the rich fabric of the West. An incredible mosaic of cowboy, California folk and 60’s rock in a unique debut album. Like the Coyote in his song, Craig boldly sits at the edge of the city lights and comments on life in the West then slips back into the desert canyons before dawn.”

Americana singer songwriter Craig Rayburn is a well seasoned musician, having played guitar and written songs for over three decades. His rough-hewn folk-rock style has garnered much local attention and airplay on radio stations in Central California. Three of his songs have been featured heavily on well known KPIG (107.5) radio. Rayburn’s long musical career has served him well in the formation of his unique and varied style. Whether one calls him an Americana artist, a rocker or simply a singer-songwriter, all would be true. His rich voice will captivate you with his songs of love, longing, loss and life. The depth of his voice and the breath of human emotion covered are far-ranging. Rayburn’s powerful vocals strike right at your heart and compel your attention

Based in Santa Cruz, he and his band played nearly every musical venue in Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay in the 80’s and 90’s, making it on to a record Kevin Kraft produced, “The Best of the Monterey Bay”. The band continued through various name and personnel changes over the years, including several tours of the Western half of the United States playing in bars, clubs, and whatever else they could wrangle.

Thereafter, Craig went back to college to pursue his degree, putting music on a slow burner. However, during this time, Craig continued to perform locally with his band “The Benders” and with other well-known musicians such as Keith Greeninger. Recently, being heavily urged on by friends and fans, Craig decided to begin work on his first solo album.

This record showcases Rayburn’s diversity, including folk-rock, rock, alternative country, ballads and Americana.

Joining him on this collaboration is Jim Norris (Lacy J. Dalton, Larry Hosford) with amazing “right on” drumming, Paul Olguin (Mazzy Star, Maria Muldaur) with his driving bass, the rich harmonies of Keith Greeninger (Wind River Crossing, Glorious Peasant) and Tamala Brown (Stanley Jordan), multi-instrumentalist Dayan Kai, S.F. pianist extraordinaire John R. Burr (Robin Ford, Alison Brown), former Wayback fiddling pro Chojo Jacques, hot licks by L.A. guitarist Randy Mitchell (Warren Zevon, Billy Bob Thorton), lush organ by Gianni Staino and some stellar dobro and slide leads by brother Keith Rayburn.

Recently, Craig has been playing in the Rayburn Brothers Band with his brother Keith Rayburn. Keith is also a talented songwriter and singer and plays slide guitar and dobro with finesse and grace. This local band features many talented musicians such as Jimmy Norris on drums, Sharon Allen on vocals, Nick Heinz on guitar, Dick Tacklind on bass, Kevin Taylor on keyboards and Eliza James on harmony vocals. They have built up a local audience and in January, along with Keith Greeninger, filled the grange hall in Aromas with over 250 people. Other venues they have played in recently are Don Quixote’s and the Felton Festival. Their audience includes many of the same fans as Keith Greeninger, Sherry Austin and Sharon Allen and all those who like rocking Americana. Their songs can be heard on www.craigrayburn.com.

Nashville-based artist and songwriter, Sally Barris, has managed to be successful in the mainstream world of country music without giving up her folk & Celtic roots.

Her unique style, influenced by artists such as: Tony Rice, Dougie Maclean, & Richard Thompson, is what makes her stand out in a city known for “cookie cutter” talent. Whether in her own hands or those of a well-established artist, such as, Lee Ann Womack, or a newcomer like American Idol finalist, Kellie Pickler, Sally’s music is unmistakably recognizable.

Some catalog highlights include : A Grammy Nomination in 2009 for “Let The Wind Chase You” (Trisha Yearwood), “Reluctant Daughter” (Martina McBride), “Some Things I Know” (Lee Ann Womack), “I’m On My Way” (Kellie Pickler), “The Innocent Years” (Kathy Mattea) and “Honesuckle Sweet” (Jessi Alexander) which appeared in the Miramax film An Unfinished Life. The Minnesota native is currently on tour with her 3rd cd: Restless Soul.

“Songwriter poised to make the breakthrough to international recognition as a major recording artist Like Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mindy Smith and Allison Moorer, Sally Barris doesn’t easily fit into the country genre, but is one of the most talented writers currently working in Nashville.” Alan Cackett Maverick Magazine U.K.

Also available: Little Voice (2004) and Reluctant Daughter (1999).

“So where have they been hiding James Lee Stanley? We could say that James Lee Stanley is probably the last great undiscovered singer-songwriter in America. But true as that may be let’s say something else let’s say that a diamond has been smuggled into the wasteland and here is where the wasteland ends“ -- Tom Robbins, Author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

“James Lee Stanley, a master at relating to audiences” - The San Francisco Chronicle. “Unexpected power from one acoustic guitar” - The Denver Post. “A standing ovation followed his set opening for Art Garfunkel” – The Sacramento Bee.

James Lee’s remarkable ability as a vocalist and composer allow him to create truly great songs, each accompanied by his amazing guitar orchestrations.

“This man is a great artist – his songs are finely-crafted and richly textured, with immediately memorable melodies and thought provoking lyrics, and his guitar playing is simply gorgeous, alternating between subtle finger picking. Lush chording, stark simplicity, rhythmically-charged complexity, and many and varied shades in between” – Fi Magazine.

“There is no need for back up, Stanley is a one man band, who doesn’t need any help” – the Milwaukee Journal.

When you couple this with his outrageously hilarious repartee, you get one of the most entertaining concerts on the circuit.

“A solo performer, Stanley drew overwhelming applause for his outrageous monologue as well as his music” – The Daily Aztec, San Diego.

From the Universal Amphitheatre to the most intimate house concert, James Lee delivers the goods. He has been hailed as one of the few all time greats and undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters. Fi Magazine listed his FREELANCE HUMAN BEING as one of the finest recordings of 1998 and one of the Top 200 Recordings of all time -- FI Magazine March 1999.

JAMES LEE STANLEY, born in Philadelphia, PA, has been recording and performing since he was fourteen. He has toured consistently since he returned from the USAF (as a Chinese linguist) and has performed up to three hundred dates a year since then with such diverse acts as BONNIE RAITT, ROBIN WILLIAMS, NICOLETTE LARSON and even BILL COSBY. STEVEN WRIGHT chose James Lee as his opening act for three years in a row; a testament to his professionalism and talent.
